Plans for the site

Sunday, August 24, 2025

Blaugust has been a nice time to check out lots of other personal sites and reflect on the directions I'd like to take my own site. All of this will probably happen quite slowly, as I don't have a lot of time for my site as it is, and the time when I work on it, it's usually because I'm writing a post rather than making something new. So perhaps these are more "wishes" for the site than "plans" right now.

Reconsider the "collections" section

This section of the site is supposed to be for lists of things I want to share, such as books I've read, games I've played, and so on. There's not a lot there currently, and I don't even really maintain the crosswords page, so that might just go. I don't think I'll ever be an avid life logger, but sometimes it is nice to share lists of favourite recipes, links, books, and so on. The goal should really be to take it easy and not fuss about trying to log everything. Sometimes I see real life-loggers and it looks kind of fun to have a record of every cool thing you did/saw/read/etc, but in reality that's way too much work.

Prettify the site

I like the minimalism of my site but it is kind of boring. Even just mixing up the fonts a bit would go a long way instead of using one font for everything. This feels like low-priority even though it would be nice.

Add comments

The great comments discussion during the first half of this Blaugust inspired me to consider adding comments. This one will probably be more of a technical challenge but I'll make it a priority when I feel I have the bandwidth for getting a bit technical. It will also inevitably involve some financial investment to host the comment server, so I want to make sure I have a enough time to get it up and running well. If I do this I may as well migrate the whole site (avoiding CORS issues). Thankfully, being a static site this should be easy.

Add a "notes" section

The purpose of a notes section would be to share knowledge and links in a more "permanent" way than a blog post. Essentially like a personal wiki or "digital garden" (the phrase is kind of cute, but I feel does disservice to gardens). There's nothing really stopping me from implementing this right away, other than laziness.
